How to track spending on a budget without an app?

Hey everyone, how does anyone keep track of spending while on a budget? I tried jotting down all my random expenses in my notes, but honestly, it got super overwhelming. My husband would definitely not be on the same page with that, lol. I’d also rather not shell out for an app to handle it. Any tips?
 
Hey, so I don't use a ton of categories. I just take a few minutes each day or every other day to jot down how much I've spent in each one. At the end of the month, I add it all up. I'm a pen and paper kind of person, and that works perfectly for me.
