How can I confirm Discover won’t pursue the remaining debt after settlement?

I just settled my Discover account for 60% of my balance. The way they do it is they take my bank account info and pull the payment on the day I approve. For the last several months, every time I called Discover, I told them I wouldn’t agree to pay until I had a written letter in my hand saying they were settling for the 60%. Today the lady said they don’t send letters ahead of time—even though the last lady I spoke with guaranteed me I’d have that l etter before Jan 30—and she only sent me a “screen share” of a scheduled payment. How do I know they can’t come after me for the rest now? I tried to escalate it to management and everything, but she said there’s absolutely no way I can get anything in writing now and I can only get the letter they send out AFTER my payment has been taken.

I’ve never had a company refuse a letter. I hope this woman is on the up and up. I’ve asked for an email so I could pay faster, but I’ve never settled without something in writing on company letterhead.

I am with QuantumOtter on this one. When I settled an old balance a couple years back I would not send a dime until I had the agreement in writing, and the rep actually emailed it to me before I gave them anything. A screenshot of a scheduled payment proves nothing about the terms. If they pull the money and there is no letter, you have zero proof the remaining 40 percent was forgiven. Tell them you need the settlement letter first, even if it delays the payment a few days. It is worth the wait.
