How can I budget with unpredictable income and multiple debts?

Hey, I’m a server, so honestly, it’s so tricky to know what my real income is gonna be! How in the world do you budget when it’s all unknown? Do you just pay the minimums first, then once enough money rolls in, wipe out that card i n full? I’ve got 8 cards (most at 0%!), 3 loans, and a car payment. I was trying to throw extra money at everything, but right now I’m just not making enough. Please, I need your help!

List your debts from smallest to largest. Make a budget that at least covers the minimum payment on each one. When your income ends up higher than you expected, put the extra toward yoru smallest debt first. I know it can feel discouraging when you don’t see results right away, or when next month you can only afford those minimum payments. But please don’t quit. Anything you can do to slowly chip away at your debt even when your income is uncertain is still progress. I genuinely wish you the best and hope you keep going. I promise it won’t feel this way forever, as long as you keep going.

Okay, so there are a bunch of ways to go about this, but your current approach? That’s a one way ticket to burnout, honestly. Trying to conquer just one financial step at a time can feel equally maddening, because that urgent I gotta pay everything off yesterday feeling is real. So sure, channel that urgency and let it keep your fire burning but let’s break things down a little more. A variable income is a straight up headache to budget for, yet it can also be super rewarding because basically how much you earn is tied to how much you can hustle. It sounds like you already know your must pay bills. If you haaven't yet, set up some steady line items for stuff like groceries, gas, etc., too. With a pile of debts to knock out, I'd start by aiming for a small savings buffer. Pay the minimums on everything just for a short season. Build up a little emergency fund that covers your biggest deductible cost. That way you have a cushion so you don't have to lean on credit cards for daily living. If you do use credit cards a lot but want to pay them off each month, wait until you've got an account that lets you handle that cleanly. Paying interest seriously sucks, so once your buffer fund is in place, then go after those debts. You can arrange your debts a few different ways, but however you line them up, I say snowball it. Focus on one debt, then roll that payment onto debt number two, and so on. Before long, you'll wipe out several debts, have some money to fall back on, and feel a whole lot better!

I'm self employed, so my income varies. I budget based on a three month average of my income. Anything I earn above that average goes into a savings account. I use that account to make up for unexpectedly short months. Once I had a good workable amount in savings, the extra money went straight to paying off debt. Now that my debt is gone, it goes toward other long term money goals.

I do deliveries. I don’t have a steady income at all mine is so sporadic that it scares most people. This is what I do: I pay the minimum on everything. If you can work holidays and weekends and pick up one extra shift a month, take that one extra shift a month and put it toward your lowest credit card debt. I’ve been doing delivery jobs for 11 years now. Some weeks I make $400, and some weeks I make only $100; it depends. It’s hard. Some days you want to cry, and other days you want to pull your hair out and give up. But just look at yourself in the mirror every morning, and tell yourself one thing: you are worth getting out of debt. I guarantee you that once you say that enough, it will get easier.
