What Are the Legal Consequences of Medical Debt in Collections?

Let’s tackle this together! I’m trying to figure out my next steps because I’m unsure about the legal implications of letting hospital bills go to collections. I currently have around $18k in medical debt from my C-section with my son. On top of that, we’re fac ing $20k in credit card debt, and I just found out that $15k of it was from my husband’s spending, which I wasn’t aware of.

I’m feeling stuck and unsure of what to do next. I’ve already reached out to the hospital’s collection department, but any advice or tips you can share would be super helpful!

First, reach out to the financial department and see if they can set you up with a payment plan. Sure, there's a chance it might go to collections, but here's the thing: you wouldn't want to risk damaging your future credit. Stay strong and take control of this!

Hey there! First, reach out to the hospital’s finance team they’ve got grants and options to help you out. Have an open chat with your husband about owning his debt and making a plan. Take it one step at a time you’ve got this! Also, a heads up: in many states, medical debt can’t even hit your credit report. Check your local rules and keep moving forward!

I worked in hospital billing about 20 years ago, so my experience isn't the most recent, but I’d suggest calling to set up a payment plan. It might also be worth asking if they can reduce the total amount due. Even if you decide not to pay it in the end, at least you’ll have more information to work with. Have others had similar experiences with this?
