Is MOHELA Reliable for Student Loan Servicing? User Experiences

Based on the reviews I found, MOHELA does not appear to be a reliable student‑loan servicer.

I looked at dozens of recent user experiences. The common problems are:

  • Payment posting failures – payments are accepted online but never show up on the account, leaving borrowers with overdue notices.
  • Missing or incorrect balances – users report thousands of dollars paid that were not applied, causing extra interest to accrue.
  • Auto‑pay glitches – auto‑pay is often cancelled or disabled without warning, and the online portal does not let borrowers reset it.
  • Extremely long hold times – callers wait 30 minutes to an hour, and callbacks rarely happen.
  • Unreachable supervisors – many callers cannot get a manager on the phone, leaving issues unresolved.
  • Confusing communication – boiler‑plate letters, broken website links, and deleted accounts add to the frustration.
  • Incorrect billing – examples include a quoted $218 monthly payment under the SAVE plan that turned into a $540 bill, and later an extra $320 a month because half the loans were not transferred correctly.
  • Delayed refunds and checks – replacement refund checks from months ago are still “processing,” even after repeated calls.

These patterns suggest systemic issues with customer service, account accuracy, and communication. If you need a servicer that reliably posts payments, keeps your balance correct, and offers responsive support, the evidence points to serious shortcomings with MOHELA.

Ultimately, the decision is yours, but the user feedback I gathered raises strong concerns about its reliability.
