How do I stop bringing work stress home every night?

Guys who run multiple businesses, or have stress from multiple fronts at once.

How do.you compartmentalise worrying and resolving everything to each issue—and not bring it home every night?

I was very good at just talking myself out of stressing in my head. But lately it’s been catching up to me.

Heaps of risk and money on the line. On the other side, demanding clients where you barely keep up getting everything done, etc.

Just looking for a technique to not bring this home every night, at least not to the extent I do.

Cheers

If you're going to run more than one business, you really need to be great at delegating.

It's incredibly hard to give the right amount of time to one business, let alone more than one.

I recently brought in a team to manage a project. They pay me a guaranteed 10% of the profit. Instead of possibly making 800k, I make a guaranteed 300k.

The weight off my shoulders is huge. It was the best decision I’ve made in business.

The lesson: be prepared to pay good money to the right people. You might earn less, but if they take stress off you, it’s worth it.

I find that writing down everything that comes to mind, so I can look at it all and address it tomorrow, works well. Finding the right people to delegate to is important too. However, there is no real way of escaping it. Business is a more than full time lifestyle, and there is always something to do or address. You simply get better at dealing with that over time.

Take 5 minutes when you get in the car, or before you leave the car when you get home, to write down everything you need to do or remember, who to call, what to organise, etc. Keep it out of your brain. Keep a to do list by your bed if you remember something, so it doesn’t affect your sleep.

I didn’t havee multiple businesses, but when I had my business, that was the best thing I had to switch off.

Without knowing anything:
Bookkeeper
Employ Mrs
Have a strict work phone/computer and a personal phone/computer
Be firm with your clients; they don’t know if you need the work, but they need your services. If they’re being difficult, that’s their problem, not yours
Listen to or read Meditations by Marcus Aurelius (stoic philosophy, not hippy stuff)

Mate, here’s the blunt truth: depending on the businesses, my advice is to hire good leaders who can assist you heavily. Pay them well, build a good culture and they damn well should look after you.

Take the fruits of your labour. Invest them in passive investments like high growth ETFs. Over time, you will build a secure portfolio. It gives you peace of mind. You know you have that if all else fails.

More often than not, everything else never fails. We put stress on ourselves to solve every issue in our business right now. That stress is fully self imposed. It doesn’t really matter.

Mental training really helps. Just like elite athletes, business owners and execs in high stress roles should do mental performance training. That’s what I did, and I got my senior leaders to do it too. Money well spent for clearer decision making and less stress.
