How can I start a career in test and tagging without experience?

Hey everyone, I’m 24 and looking for a career change—I currently work in an office and want to get into test and tagging.

I always see Jims Test and Tagging franchises come up, and it feels like the easier route since it’s harder to come by a job offering test and tagging.

If anyone’s in this field, what’s the best way to find a job besides the 1-day course? What else would I need to be considered, or what’s the best way to get my foot in teh door? I’ve applied to a few on Seek since January but haven’t heard anything back.

As other blokes've said try something else. You're no doubt aware what it costs companies annually; but drumming up business is very hard. I did it as a side hustle on weekends or after hours for a while did T&T ticket, then 3 phase and plug replacement courses, to kill time when I was injured at a job where I was required to do it daily. Getting those small jobs was all word of mouth and in an industry with a high volume of need for it, and a high volume of poor record keeping and people checking their tags. But honestly, I'd never do it full time again. The gear's expensive; and working for someone else,!the hourly rate's a pittance. I'd only get 5–10% of what I made the boss in an hour and I was on the fast side at 30–35 items an hour. It's dead boring. Plus you have to waste a heap of time doing online training just to enter offices and facilities. It's definitely not something you could just jump into after doing the courses either they don't cover RCD testing, which is a whole other thing, and no place will want you to test their equipment if they have to get a second guy to come back for the RCD panel. Just my two cents at 2026 inflation. Good luck though but I'd suggest almost anything else.

There are loads of construction sites up and running, man! Might not be what you’re after, but I’m a labourer for aircon been here 5 weeks and I’m on 58 an hour Definitely not what I wanted to do, but the money is there, and if I stick around for a while I’ll get 1st class.
