How can I make spousal super contributions for my stay-at-home wife?

Hey guys,

Super contributions for a stay-at-home wife. We have 2 kids, 1 and 3. It's a bit late in the piece now, but we are looking at spousal contributions to super. Can someone help me understand?

I'm 30yo with $100k in super, just under $100k wage for the year. My wife is 27 with 40k super and no income for the past 2 years. We have 1 PPOR with $215k owing and worth $800k.

Any help to understand, as she is having a freak out about being able to contribute. I see my super as ours come later in life, but she is still worried about contributing late in life.

Mate, I'm in a similar spot to you two young kids and the breadwinner right now. Explain to your wife how much she really does! She holds down the fort looking after 2 kids every day while you're at work bringin home the money. She's contributing more than enough right now! Consider putting more money into your mortgage and paying that fucker off ASAP instead of worrying about her super for now. When the kids go to school/daycare 5 days a week, mum can get a job again if she wants, and then she can worry about catching up on super.

Read about the co contrib options explained online. It's a tough situation, as she obviously wants super like you. But don't worry about it too much if you can. You're young and not paying much tax. You have better stuff to spend money on. Wait until you're a decade older, paying 15% more tax, and then pump it hard. More spare income plus more tax saving.
