Can I switch to an electrical apprenticeship at 33 with a family?

Hey everyone,

So here’s my situation – I’m currently working as a Project Manager with an insurance builder in Melbourne, with about 1.5 years of experience managing jobs end-to-end from site through to completion. I also have a diploma in building construction.

I’ve come to realize I really enjoy being on site and getting my hands dirty – way more than the admin and paperwork side of things. So I’m thinking about making the leap into the electrical trade as a mature-age apprentice, ideally no commercial or union sites.

I’m 33, got a little family – one kiddo and another on the way. My wife’s a nurse, and we’ve got a mortgage, so I need to make sure I’m making a smart decision before I commit.

For those of you in the industry:

1. Do you think this is a realistic move at my stage in life?
2. What’s the best pathway to get started – a TA role or go straight for an apprenticeship?
3. Are there any companies, group training organisations, or websites you’d recommend for getting into union/EBA sites as a mature-age apprentice?
4. Any other suggestions for me?

Really appreciate any honest advice you can share. Thanks!

Consider the possibility of joining as a NECA apprentice they have their own trade schools in Carlton and Dandenong. It's also worth exploring that you find work with union companies for your entire apprenticeship, which could potentially lead to being sgined on full time. Reflecting on my own path, I started my apprenticeship at 28 with a partner, a child, and a mortgage, and managed to make it work undeniably tight on cash, yet it remains the best decision I've made. There's a certain uncertainty in that declaration, but it's a reflection of my experience.
