What happens if, say, you have debt but lose your job? (like I did... )
Will debt collectors still come after you? Will they allow you some time, to get back on your feet, before "harassing" you with letters and calls?

I know this is not what you want to hear, but yes, debt collectors will come after you even if you lose your job!
You could, however, try and talk to them, send them a letter or something, explaining you can't afford to make the payments they expect from you, because of your particular situation. However, they might come after you anyway.
What you could do is, maybe, talk to a bankruptcy lawyer. You probably won't have to file for bankruptcy, but you could at least get some good, legal advice.
